The fundamental message Putin sought to convey was that Moscow regarded Ukraine as an inalienable part of its sphere of interest and would fight for it rather than see Ukraine turned against it as an “anti-Russia.”
Far from engaging in duplicity or obfuscation, Putin again was speaking clearly and directly”.
