What Is Western Civilization?, Prof. Frankly Fukuyama, 5 March 2026

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke to Europeans of a shared “Western Civilization” at the Munich Security Conference in February.

What what does that phrase mean? For many conservatives, it means a specifically Christian culture, while more most Europeans it means the liberal civilization that came out of the Enlightenment.

Some readers have pointed out that Jesse Jackson did not personally endorse the elimination of the Western Culture core course at Stanford, though student demonstrators did.

Frankly Fukuyama is the YouTube channel and blog of Francis Fukuyama, Senior Fellow at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.

What “Western Civilization” Really MeansIt has less to do with faith—and more to do with the Enlightenment—than Marco Rubio thinks.

Francis Fukuyama is the Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at Stanford University.

His latest book is Liberalism and Its Discontents.

He is also the author of the “Frankly Fukuyama” column, carried forward from American Purpose, at Persuasion.
